SanDisk Cuts Sansa Connect Price by $100
SanDisk has updated pricing on its WiFi connected Sansa Connect PMP. The price has dropped from the previous $250 to $149.99. That’s a full $100 discount, which should be plenty to woo shoppers considering buying a Zune or iPod to check out SanDisk's wares.I have a Sansa connect and it is way better than the Zune in my opinion. The Sansa connect specs remain the same with a 2.2” TFT LCD, WiFi connectivity, internet radio streaming capability, 4GB of flash storage, and more.
You can also find free WiFi access for the Connect with AnchorFree. The only problem I had with the Sansa Connect was that it wouldn’t work with my SSID being set to not be broadcasted.

CNET Reviews Venzero Slickr
CNET put up a review this week of a PMP from Venzero called the Slicker. The device doesn’t appear form photos to be that small and as CNET puts it, the device has no features to write home about. The most appealing aspect of the design is the looks, which is very iPhone-like. Measuring in at 3.25” x 2.25” x 0.33 it’s a compact device for sure.
The screen is a 2.8” 320 x 240 LCD with 1.6 million colors. The device has 2Gb of internal storage and can use a miniSD card of up to 4GB giving a total possible storage of 6GB. Overall the Slickr was rated a 5.3 which is average on the CNET scale. Via CNET

Cowon X7 Pics Leaked?
Some pictures along with rumors of a new Cowon X7 media player are making their rounds today. No real specs are known about the player, but a look at the photo shows a very sleek design. You can see a mic built-in so voice recording is a probability. Other than that it’s hard to tell how big or any other real specs of the machine.
The looks of the device remind me of a PBP for some reason, I guess it’s the glossy black color more than anything else. I’m betting if they make this player, it will be popular. Good looks go a long way in life. Via I4U

Creative Zen V Plus 16GB
Creative has some of the most popular PMP devices this side of the world killing iPod. Creative has taken their tiny Zen V Plus and shoehorned 16GB of flash storage into the tiny player. That makes the current available storage capacities in the Zen V Plus range 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB. The new 16Gb version certainly isn’t cheap though at $399.99.
For that kind of coin you could get much more storage space in a PMP based on a hard drive. That said the hard drive based versions probably won’t be as small as the Zen V Plus. Via Product-Reviews.net

Sony China gives us two new PVPs
Before I say anything about these players, I've got to say how like Sony it is to have promotional shots with Spider-Man. The company's cash cow is seen on the PMX-M70, and another new model, the PMX-U50, is also from Sony. The two units also feature the Xross Media Bar, an interface than in my opinion isn't that amazing, but Sony seems to think it's a gift from God. The M70 features capacities of 2, 4, and 8 GB, with a 4.3" TFT display, direct video recording, and an FM tuner/voice recorder. The U50 is in 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB, and 4 GB sizes, with a 2.4" display and the same basic features as the M70.

Diasonic's new PMP looks like, doesn't act like GPS
The first thing I thought when I saw this new video player from Diasonic is that it looks kind of like a GPS system. Unfortunately, that's about the only feature it doesn't have.It comes with Windows CE 5.0, TV tuner/antenna, a 4.3" screen, and a DaVinci chipset. Right now it's only slated for launch in Korea (didn't see that one coming)
By the way, am I the only one who thinks this is a blatant rip-off of the name Panasonic?

Plezo pushes new portable video, game player
Obviously, at its core, the new PMG-250 from Plezo is one of those cheap game players you see in the Sunday ads all the time. However, it can also play videos through the SD card slot, and its main function is as an emulator. The 2.5" screen on this player can play back games or videos on SD cards, or the 2 GB internal hard drive. We're looking at a $180 price tag for this guy, though that's a translation from Korean currency, where it currently stands as a region exclusive.

TTOOL looks AAWESOME
Here's one of the coolest looking portable video players we've ever seen. Of course right now it's only in Korea, but if any of those crazy PVPs should finally make its way to the US, it's this one.The TTOOL runs Windows CE 5.0 and has a 400 MHz processor and 64 MB of ROM/SDRAM.
What's more is that it even has a GPS system built in. Stereo speakers and an SD card slot round out the features of this super sleek device.

Tablet DVD player with PVP input
Here's the Xoro HDS 7510, a new portable video player that can read from SD cards and play back MP4 videos. Of course, the main draw is the DVD player...and the fact that it's presented in a convertible tablet format. The resolution chimes in at 800x400 pixels, providing a 9.2" widescreen picture.
It's available now in the UK, priced at around £215 ($420).

Wolverine ESP to make retail debut at Circuit City
Despite its name, the Wolverine ESP has nothing to do with psychic powers of X-Men characters. Instead, it's a portable media player with capacities of 80 to 160 GB. With a 3.6 inch TFT LCD, it can play MPEG-4 and WMV videos, as well as videos recorded directly onto the player from any input source. In addition to the fairly large hard drive, the device has a 7-in-1 card reader.
The price of the 80 GB version will be $379, with a bit more for the 160 GB model. It will hit Circuit City stores across the country next week.

Clix 2 iRiver brings a dose of sleeky goodness
We've seen a lot of small PMPs, but for some reason this new iRiver makes me want to coin a new acronym - UPPMP (ultra portable portable media player). Think it'll catch on? The Clix 2 sports a 2.2 inch OLED screen and can play back MPEG-4 and WMV movies (at 30 FPS).Since the iRiver name is well known, the company didn't do anything to really change the overall functionality. It just made it a little bit smaller.
Oh yeah, and it also has support for Flash-based content. I suspect this will become much more common in the next year or two.

PMP eye candy: the new G40
Yet another interesting portable video player design comes from Blusens, a Spanish company who has unveiled the G40. It's a 2.5" LCD screen player that can show MPEG-4 videos, and is packed with 1, 2, or 4 GB of internal capacity. For as small as the buttons are, and as condensed as they are on the device, there still seems to be quite a bit of excess non-screen space. Nonetheless it still looks pretty portable.

The 'Eye River'
Here's one for the "so crazy it makes you smile" files. The Eye River not only rips off the iRiver name, but it also blatantly rips off the design of Microsoft's Zune. Piling on to the copyright infringement is a user interface that looks remarkably like the iPhone.Video support on the player, which comes packed with a 16 GB hard drives, includes AVI, DivX, and H.264. In addition, it can of course play music and it has a bunch of PDA-type basic applications (calculator, games, etc). This video player comes to us from Tibet of all places, and given the obvious potential legal issues around it, we probably won't ever see it in the US.

AMP3 gives you an MP3 player in a chocolate egg
Check this out. No videos will play on this, but we had to give it a brief mention because it's one of the craziest digital media player promotions of all time. Just in time for Easter, the $40 egg has a creamy nougat (I mean, hard MP3 player) in the middle. It's only got 128 MB, so you know this is just the kind of thing that parents who think they're hip will want to get for their kids.

Sony's NW-A800 is like a fat iPod Nano
Sony's newest portable video player, the NW-A800, has made the rounds of initial impressions and it seems it's most closely related to the iPod Nano in terms of price and features. However, it is about twice the thickness of its Apple rival. The biggest addition from previous Sony PMPs is that it supports RSS feeds for automatic downloading of audio and video podcasts. It sports a 2" QVGA screen with a 240x320 pixel resolution. It tips the scales a very light 53 grams.
Of course, Sony's proprietary music platform, SonicStage, is at the backbone of the A800. It's ambidextorus-friendly, toting the ability to switch screen presentation between right- and left-handedness.

Calvary CAPP06 Player
If you're looking for a basic, inexpensive portable video player, Calvary's CAPP06 may be just what you're looking for. It's got a 2.5" TFT screen and flip-out speakers that make it look like somewhat awkward. All menu navigation and controls are done with the buttons on the side of the unit. With MPEG4, JPEG, MP3, and WMA playback, it's not the most compatible device we've ever seen. Additionally, there's only 512 MB of internal memory, which can be expanded with SD cards. Again, you can tell just from looking at it that this is a low-end player, so it's not for those who want a totally pimped out device, but if you're on a budget, you should check it out. Its $119 price won't bankrupt you.

RoverTv For Media Recording/Playback
If there's one thing I hate about most portable video devices out there, it's that there's way too much space on the front reserved for buttons and controls. That's why Doghouse Electronic's RoverTv looks so appealing to me. It comes in both a 3.5" screen and 4" wide-screen size, and from the looks of it the video screen takes up about 95% of the front of the device, leaving just enough room for holding it without obstructing the view.It also looks very thin, unlike TwinMos's more bulky-looking thing. The RoverTv has a Samsung TFT screen with resolutions of 320x240 and 480x272 for the 3.5" and 4" screens, respectively. It runs exclusively on SD cards (no internal memory), but get this -- you get 3 GB of SD cards (a 1 GB and a 2 GB) in the box! RoverTv supports MP3, MP4, WAV, JPEG, BMP, and GIF. In addition, it's got AV input and a built-in FM tuner. Plus, it supports TiVo To Go and iTunes. It's clearly geared towards those who want to record directly to the device. What's cool is that it also has a timer, so assumedly you can plug it into your TV and set it to record a certain show at a specific time. One battery charge will last for 6 hours of video playtime, or 12 hours for music.
The 3.5" version costs $299, while the 4" counterpart goes for $349. It looks like a great device for those who really want to just record video from other media.

TwinMos's ''Big-Boned'' PMP525
It seems everyone wants to get in on the portable video player action lately, and TwinMos is the latest company to jump on the bandwagon. It looks a little bit fatter than most other modern players, even though it's only 22 mm thick. It only has a 2.5" screen and does not add a lot of excess space around the screen, so the thickness just ends up being much more proportionally wide than the competitors. It's a flash player and runs off CompactFlash (types I and II) up to 4 GB. It supports MPEG 1/2/4, MP3, WMA, and OGG, as well as JPEG photo viewing. There's also a built-in MIC and line-in jack so you can record your own audio files. Rounding out the features are USB 2.0 compatibility and an optional FM radio. Battery life on video is 4.5 hours. This early entry from TwinMos is most likely geared towards the portabilitiy freaks. 2.5" is small in today's market (see the Odd-i 7" video player).

Odd-i N700D
Taking the "portable" just a little bit out of "portable video player", the Odd-i N700D sports a wide 7" screen. Most devices are around 4" or 5" so they'll fit in your pocket, but you may have a little tougher time doing that with the N700D. There is an attempt to scale down the size by having no internal hard drive, and instead just an SD slot. Although, it's possible that you will also be able to attach an external HD to it.It's also got USB connectivity, which will help since you'll obviously be swapping your video, music, and image files frequently. There's built-in GPS and to go along with that, a feature they're calling "picture-in-navigation" which lets you see maps and video at the same time. It's not the most format-compatible device we've ever come across, but it does support MPEG1, MPEG4 SP, xVID, DivX., & WMV. Additionally, it has a TV-out slot. It will be out in Korea in the next week or so, though no pricing details are apparent at this point.

I do not know where this one was hiding but it is available in stores like Buy.comIt is more comparable to the Flipster or the ZVUE!, as it does not have a Hard drive for storage of Video content. For that the price is a bit high compared to the RCA Lyra MP4 Jukebox with 20GB.

ZVUE! Video Player for $99
This morning San Francisco based Hand Held Entertainment announced that the $99 ZVUE! portable video/mp3 player is on schedule to be in retail stores next month. Just in time for the 2003 Holiday Shopping Season. The hand-held ZVUE! can play videos, music videos and MP3s and features an ultra-bright, 2.5-inch full-color screen that plays full-motion video and displays digital images. About the size of a deck of playing cards, the ZVUE! target market is "tween" (youth ages 8 to 12), teenage (youth ages 13-19) and early twenty-something (ages 20 to 25) markets.
Like the MadPlayer launched last October, the ZVUE! uses a costumed compression engine. And like the Madplayer, there will no doubt be utility programs that will convert the various popular video files to the smaller HHE format.
I've been to the HHE offices several times and believe that once you see it, you will want it. I want it. The big question of the season will probably be how can you get it. At this time, ZVUE! isn't set up to accept pre-orders.
Hopefully, I will be posting a video clip of the ZVUE! in action. The video guy I went down there with last week has been busy with other things. Stay tuned.
